Description
A magnificent and deeply moving 1:72 scale diecast masterpiece honoring one of the most legendary acts of individual valor in wartime aviation history. This premium Corgi Aviation Archive release (US32622F) showcases the Avro Lancaster B.X precisely as it features on the commemorative presentation packaging. The model depicts the storied heavy bomber "VR-A" (Serial KB726) assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force No.419 "Moose" Squadron. This historic aircraft is immortalized by the fateful actions of June 12–13, 1944, during a critical post-D-Day bombing raid over Cambrai, France. Raked by devastating cannon fire from a Luftwaffe night fighter, the fuselage was quickly engulfed in a raging hydraulic inferno. As the crew prepared to bail out, 27-year-old Pilot Officer Andrew Charles "Andy" Mynarski spotted his rear tail gunner trapped in a jammed turret. Without hesitation, Mynarski fought through the flames to free his friend, continuing his rescue efforts until his own flight suit and parachute were completely ablaze. Though the gunner miraculously survived the subsequent crash, Mynarski tragically succumbed to his severe burns, earning a posthumous Victoria Cross for his profound selflessness—the final VC awarded to a Canadian airman in World War II.
As clearly designated on the collectible box graphics, this limited-edition release was produced as an exclusive offering from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Highly prized by advanced military history collectors for its stunning commemorative presentation, heavy diecast metal construction, and large physical footprint, it features a beautifully rendered authentic wartime camouflage pattern. The airframe accurately displays structural details including its twin oval tail fins, full defensive gun turrets, clear multi-panel greenhouse glazing, and high-fidelity engine nacelles. Perfect for standard shelf display or a dynamic in-flight showcase using its original specialized display stand accessories, this museum-grade replica serves as an extraordinary tribute to ultimate sacrifice and aviation heritage.
