Description

An authentic 1:72 scale diecast model representing Britain's iconic Mach 2 Cold War interceptor. This model by Corgi (AA32315) replicates the English Electric/BAC Lightning F.Mk 6 (XP770), operating with RAF No.56 Squadron ("Firebirds") out of RAF Wattisham, England, in 1975. First flown on August 4, 1954, to fulfill a requirement for a supersonic research aircraft, the Lightning was uniquely designed with a delta wing based on captured WWII German engineering research, standing as the final RAF fighter produced entirely in Britain. Built purely for raw speed and a phenomenal rate of climb to protect UK airspace from encroaching Soviet Tu-95 "Bear" bombers, its twin engines were uniquely stacked directly on top of one another, resulting in an expanded profile and an unusual height capable of Mach 2.5. Airframe XP770 first flew in 1966, famously making ten demonstration flights at the Farnborough Airshow in Royal Saudi Air Force colors before going on to serve with No.74 "Tigers," No.56 "Firebirds," and concluding its service at No.5 Squadron at RAF Binbrook.

Part of the Aviation Archive Collector Series, this premium 1:72 scale model is large, heavy, and engineered using a solid diecast metal construction with a minimal use of plastic parts. Replicating a definitive late-production variant, the model captures the unique F.Mk 6 structural updates including a refined wing design, a fueling probe, a clipped tail fin, and an enlarged ventral fuel tank featuring an integrated forward twin cannon pack with simulated stainless-steel shielding. The cockpit canopy is configurable and can be posed in either an open or closed position. Complete with a separate photo-etched metal cockpit crew ladder included with the package, this limited edition provides a commanding presence.
