This 1:72 diecast model of Douglas R4D-5 ‘Que Sera Sera’ commemorates a landmark moment in aviation and polar exploration history. The R4D was the U.S. Navy’s designation for the C-47 Skytrain, and this particular variant, fitted with skis and JATO (Jet-Assisted Take-Off) rockets, was specially adapted for operations on snow and ice. On 31st October 1956 at 08:34 GMT, aircraft number 12418 of Squadron VX-6 (Air Development Squadron Six) made history as the first aircraft to land at the South Pole.
Named ‘Que Sera Sera’ (“What will be, will be”), the aircraft's successful landing marked a significant achievement in polar aviation and demonstrated the versatility and ruggedness of the C-47 airframe in extreme conditions.
