The CH-47 Chinook, developed to meet a U.S. Army requirement, first flew on September 21, 1961, with deliveries beginning in August 1962. Over 700 were ordered, with later versions like the CH-47B and CH-47C featuring upgraded engines and rotor systems. The CH-47C, powered by two 3,750 shp T55-L-11C engines, could lift nearly as much as the original model's total weight, marking a significant boost in capability.
