Description
A pioneer of the RAF's early-war bombing offensive. This 1:72 scale diecast model recreates the Vickers Wellington Mk I of No.9 Squadron, based at RAF Honington in 1939. One of the first units equipped with the type, No.9 Squadron participated in the historic raid against enemy warships off Brunsbüttel on September 4th, 1939—one of the very first large-scale RAF operations of the war. This model represents the "Wimpy" during the transition from risky daylight raids to the night bombing tactics that would ultimately define its distinguished combat career.
This inaugural Corgi Aviation Archive Wellington release is celebrated for its intricate replication of Barnes Wallis' famous "geodesic" airframe construction. The model features simulated fabric-stretched surfaces, visible through the fuselage windows, and includes a configurable bomb load with open bay doors. It is a vital centerpiece for any Bomber Command collection, honoring the resilience of the crews who flew these unique lattice-structure bombers during the opening chapters of WWII.
