Initially designated HSS-2, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King was designed as an anti-submarine helicopter for the US Navy and first flew on 11th March 1959. It has a watertight hull and outrigged floats for stability on the water into which the main wheels of the undercarriage retract. The Sea King has been regarded as one of the most versatile helicopters ever built and is still in service worldwide with many air arms in several roles. Sea King registration number 149699 was one of the first to enter US Navy service and joined HS-3 Squadron in 1962 in an anti-submarine training role.
