Description

A striking and highly detailed 1:48 scale diecast representation of the vividly marked Fokker D.VII flown by German fighter ace Ernst Udet during the final year of the First World War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA38902 depicts Udet's distinctive aircraft while serving with Luftstreitkräfte Jasta 4 during June 1918.

Ernst Udet became one of Germany's most successful fighter pilots of the First World War. After initially serving as a motorcycle dispatch rider and observer, he trained as a pilot and went on to achieve 62 confirmed aerial victories. Udet commanded both Jasta 4 and Jasta 37 and received Germany's highest military decoration, the Pour le Mérite, commonly known as the “Blue Max”.

This aircraft carries one of the most recognisable personal colour schemes applied to a Fokker D.VII. Its bright red fuselage is combined with bold red and white striping across the upper wing, while the lower wings retain a contrasting printed lozenge camouflage pattern. Large black and white national crosses appear across the wings and fuselage, with the prominent inscription “LO!” displayed on the fuselage side.

The tail also carries the phrase “Du doch nicht!!”, which has been interpreted as a defiant message to Udet's opponents. Together with the highly individual red and white finish, these personal markings make the aircraft an especially distinctive subject among the many Fokker D.VIIs operated by the German Air Service during 1918.

Designed by Reinhold Platz, the Fokker D.VII first flew in late 1917 and quickly developed a reputation as one of the finest fighters of the First World War. Its welded steel-tube fuselage, thick cantilever wings and powerful inline engine gave it excellent handling and impressive performance at altitude. The aircraft was considered so effective that the Armistice terms specifically required surviving examples to be surrendered to the Allies.

Limited to 1,700 pieces worldwide, this substantial Corgi release is particularly appealing to collectors of First World War aviation and historically important fighter aces. The model features extensive diecast construction, simulated fabric-covered surfaces, detailed cockpit instrumentation, twin Spandau machine guns, separately rendered exhaust and radiator components, a simulated wooden propeller, authentic lozenge camouflage and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.

- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
