A distinctive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-3 associated with Hauptmann Hans “Assi” Hahn, commander of III./Jagdgeschwader 2 “Richthofen” during operations over France in 1942. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Legends range, AA34303 depicts Hahn's aircraft at Théville during May 1942.
Hans Hahn was one of the Luftwaffe's leading fighter pilots on the Western Front. Known by the nickname “Assi”, he served extensively with Jagdgeschwader 2 and became Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 2, operating against Royal Air Force formations over France and the English Channel.
During 1942, III./JG 2 began converting from the Messerschmitt Bf 109 to the increasingly formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190. The new fighter offered strong performance at low and medium altitude together with particularly heavy armament, giving Luftwaffe units operating over northern France an effective opponent to contemporary RAF fighters.
The aircraft represented by this release is commonly identified as Fw 190A-3 Werknummer 223. Hahn's personal markings included the distinctive “Cockerel Head” emblem associated with the Gruppenstab aircraft of III./JG 2, a reference to his surname, as “Hahn” translates as rooster in German.
The model also reproduces the unusual command markings carried by Hahn's aircraft. These included white tactical symbols outlined in black and the vertical Gruppe bar aft of the fuselage cross extending into a band around the rear fuselage, creating a particularly recognisable appearance.
Hahn achieved the majority of his victories while serving on the Western Front and became particularly well known during the intensive aerial fighting over the English Channel. He later transferred to command II./JG 54 on the Eastern Front before being forced down behind Soviet lines and taken prisoner during 1943.
Designed under the direction of Kurt Tank, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 became one of Germany's most important fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Its powerful BMW radial engine, wide-track landing gear and heavy armament provided a combination of performance, durability and firepower that complemented the Messerschmitt Bf 109.
The Fw 190A-3 incorporated the BMW 801D-series radial engine and carried a formidable combination of machine guns and cannon. Its compact construction, broad undercarriage and responsive handling made it particularly effective during the fighter operations undertaken over France and the Channel Front during 1942.
This Corgi Aviation Archive release features substantial diecast construction with detailed surface markings, simulated fabric-textured control surfaces and an accurately reproduced radial-engine cowling. The internal cooling fan rotates with the propeller, while the model also includes detailed landing gear, cockpit detailing and the original transparent presentation display stand.
