Description
A distinctive 1:48 scale diecast representation of Fokker Dr.I 152/17, flown by Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen while commanding Jagdgeschwader 1 in March 1918. Corgi AA38304 recreates one of the Red Baron’s earlier triplanes, finished only partially in the red colouring that later became inseparably associated with his name.
Serial 152/17 carried a red engine cowling, wheel covers, upper wing, wing struts and rear fuselage, while much of the remaining airframe retained its factory finish. Richthofen used this aircraft to claim his 64th, 65th and 66th aerial victories, making it an important subject from the final phase of his combat career.
The Fokker Dr.I entered service during 1917 after German interest in the manoeuvrability of the British Sopwith Triplane. Its compact dimensions, three-wing configuration and rotary engine gave it exceptional agility, although its relatively modest speed and demanding handling required considerable skill from its pilots.
Manfred von Richthofen became the highest-scoring fighter ace of the First World War, achieving 80 confirmed aerial victories. As commander of JG 1—the celebrated “Flying Circus”—his personal aircraft and red markings became among the most recognisable symbols of early military aviation.
After the Armistice, the surviving 152/17 was displayed at Berlin’s Zeughaus Museum. It was later moved east during the Second World War to protect it from bombing, but subsequently disappeared and its ultimate fate remains unknown.
Limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, this Corgi Aviation Archive release features diecast construction with detailed sub-components, fine structural bracing, a rotating propeller and a carefully represented pilot figure. Its historically significant airframe and partially red finish make it particularly appealing to collectors of First World War aviation and Red Baron aircraft.
