A striking and highly detailed 1:48 scale diecast representation of the brightly marked Fokker D.VII flown by Kurt Monnington of Luftstreitkräfte Jasta 18. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA38908 depicts Monnington's aircraft while operating over the Western Front during May 1918.
German fighter units frequently used highly individual aircraft markings during the final year of the First World War. These bold colours helped pilots identify members of their own formation during combat and gave many squadrons a distinctive visual identity.
Jasta 18 became associated with brightly coloured aircraft and was known for its prominent red markings. Monnington's Fokker D.VII carried a vivid red finish combined with contrasting white areas, black national crosses and personal emblems that made the aircraft immediately recognisable.
The aircraft's markings included a black raven insignia associated with the unit and a skull-and-crossbones emblem connected with Monnington's earlier military service. These personal details give the model an especially distinctive appearance among Corgi's First World War releases.
Designed by Reinhold Platz, the Fokker D.VII first flew in late 1917 and quickly became regarded as one of the finest fighters of the First World War. Its welded steel-tube fuselage, thick cantilever wings and strong high-altitude performance gave German pilots an aircraft that was both manoeuvrable and forgiving to fly.
Limited to 1,300 pieces worldwide, this substantial release features extensive diecast construction, simulated fabric-covered surfaces, detailed cockpit instrumentation, twin Spandau machine guns and a simulated wooden propeller. Further detailing includes separately rendered exhaust and radiator components, fine undercarriage bracing and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
