The A-4 Skyhawk, developed to replace the A-1 Skyraider, was a lightweight, agile, and cost-effective attack aircraft that didn’t require folding wings. The A-4E variant featured upgrades like stronger airframes, improved engines (up to 9,300 lb thrust), enhanced avionics, and additional hardpoints. Known as “The Workhorse of Vietnam,” it earned the nickname The Little Plane That Could for its reliability and versatility. Eight A-4Es were also sold to the Royal Australian Navy.
One notable pilot was John Sidney McCain III, who survived the 1967 USS Forrestal fire, later flew A-4Es with VA-163 Saints, and was shot down over Vietnam. Captured and imprisoned for 5½ years, McCain was highly decorated and went on to a distinguished political career as U.S. Senator.
