No. 141 Squadron reformed in October 1939 at RAF Turnhouse, initially flying Gladiators and then Blenheims before receiving Boulton Paul Defiants in April 1940. After a disastrous first daylight combat in July—losing 6 of 9 aircraft—the squadron transitioned to a more effective night-fighter role. Defiant L7009 (TW-H), flown by Flt. Lt. D.G. Donald with gunner Plt. Off. A.C. Hamilton, was shot down by a Bf 109E on 19 July 1940. The aircraft bore rare RAF nose art featuring a rooster and the name Cock o' the North.
