Description
A pioneering, radar-equipped nocturnal hunter from the closing days of WWII. This highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast model by Corgi (AA35709) replicates the two-seat Messerschmitt Me 262B-1a/U1 "Red 10" (Werknummer 110639), flown by the legendary night fighter ace Oberleutnant Kurt Welter. Operating with the specialized night-fighter unit 10. Staffel, Nachtjagdgeschwader 11 (10./NJG 11) out of Magdeburg, Germany, in April 1945, Welter utilized the revolutionary jet to hunt down elusive RAF Mosquito night intruders. Welter became notorious for his prowess in the dark, claiming the first-ever night victory in a jet fighter in December 1944. He went on to log a total of 63 combat victories, with his final tally including more than 33 twin-engine Mosquito bombers. Finished in an authentic late-war squiggly winter/night "wellington" mottled camouflage scheme, this model highlights the birth of jet-powered night interception.
