Description
The hard-fighting Pacific mount of a multi-theatre ace. This highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast model by Corgi (US35213) replicates the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk "Texas Longhorn," flown by Lieutenant John Landers of the 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, based out of Port Moresby, New Guinea, in December 1942. Nicknamed "Whispering John," Landers originally cut his combat teeth during the epic defense of Darwin, Australia. He officially achieved ace status in this very aircraft on December 26, 1942, when he shot down two Japanese Ki-43 "Oscar" fighters before being forced to bail out when his own plane was critically damaged. Landers would survive to transfer to the European Theatre, eventually finishing the war as a prominent fighter group commander with 14.5 confirmed aerial victories.
Ideal for curators of Pacific Theatre air campaigns and WWII fighter history, this Aviation Archive Collector Series release serves as a definitive historical artifact of the Fifth Air Force's early struggle against Japanese expansion. The model is engineered for exceptional scale accuracy, featuring authentic olive drab and earth brown camouflage, a highly detailed cockpit interior, and the iconic "Texas Longhorn" steer nose art artwork. This premium diecast metal model offers a sophisticated display presence for collectors prioritizing provenance and legendary pilot histories, making it a premier acquisition for any gallery dedicated to pioneer aerospace engineering and the 49th Fighter Group legacy.
