Description

A highly detailed 1:48 scale diecast representation of a Royal Canadian Air Force Supermarine Spitfire operating over North Africa during the Second World War. Released as part of the Hobby Master Air Power Series, HA7851 depicts Spitfire Mk V BR487, coded “AN-V”, of RCAF No. 417 Squadron while serving in Tunisia during 1943.

No. 417 Squadron, known as the “City of Windsor” Squadron, was formed in England in November 1941 as part of RAF Fighter Command. Initially operating Spitfires in Britain, the unit was transferred to Egypt in June 1942 to support the Desert Air Force during the North African campaign. The squadron subsequently operated across Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Sicily and Italy as Allied forces advanced through the Mediterranean theatre.

During April 1943, No. 417 Squadron became the only Canadian fighter squadron serving within the Desert Air Force. Its Spitfires provided fighter protection and ground-support capability during the final stages of the Tunisian campaign. Aircraft BR487 is reproduced in a distinctive desert camouflage scheme, with contrasting upper-surface colours, a light blue underside, prominent RAF roundels and the squadron code “AN-V” displayed along the fuselage.

Developed from the original Spitfire design created by R.J. Mitchell, the Spitfire Mk V was introduced as an important wartime development intended to counter increasingly capable Luftwaffe fighters. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it combined the Spitfire's elegant elliptical wing with excellent manoeuvrability and strong overall performance. The Mk V became one of the most widely produced Spitfire variants and served in numerous theatres, including Britain, Malta, North Africa and the Mediterranean.

This substantial Hobby Master release is particularly appealing to collectors of larger-scale Spitfires, Canadian military aviation and North African campaign subjects. The model features extensive diecast construction, a detailed cockpit beneath a clear canopy, a rotating metal propeller, separately rendered exhaust stacks and accurately reproduced desert markings. Further features include a positionable rudder, optional undercarriage configuration and the original Hobby Master presentation display stand.

  • A small area of paint bubbling is present on the upper surface of the horizontal tail stabiliser.
  • One isolated paint bubble is present on the side of the fuselage, immediately forward of the cockpit section.
  • Comes complete.

Box condition - Excellent (8/10)

  • General shelf wear is present around the edges and corners.
  • One corner of the upper flap is slightly raised and creased.

- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
