Description
A uniquely named Very Long Range (VLR) warrior from the fierce air battles of the Pacific. This premium 1:48 scale diecast model by Hobby Master (HA7744B) replicates the North American P-51D Mustang (#44-72587 / "619"), famously christened "Hon Mistake." Operating out of Airfield 3 on the volcanic island of Iwo Jima during the summer of 1945, this aircraft was assigned to the 462nd Fighter Squadron, 506th Fighter Group. It was shared by Second Lieutenant James R. Bercaw and First Lieutenant William G. Ebersole—the youngest member of the squadron. Ebersole flew twelve high-stakes missions in this fighter, including ten grueling Very Long Range bomber escort runs over the Japanese mainland, ultimately earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. The aircraft's humorous nickname "Hon Mistake" reportedly originated after it accidentally shot up an outhouse while a Japanese soldier was using the facility. This model perfectly replicates its striking natural metal finish contrasted by the vibrant solid yellow tail and wing tips characteristic of the 506th FG.
Ideal for curators of Pacific Theatre operations and elite 1:48 scale warbird collections, this Air Power Series release serves as a definitive historical artifact. The large 1:48 scale model is engineered with exceptional precision, constructed almost entirely from heavy diecast metal with intelligent use of high-grade plastic components. Key technical highlights include a sliding canopy that opens to reveal pad-printed flight controls, an instrument panel, and radio equipment boxes. The all-metal propeller spins freely, and the structural wing flaps and radiator cowling are fully movable. Additional fine details include separately applied metal exhaust stacks with six flanged pipes on each side, pad-printed rivets across the airframe, and a complete subassembly package including landing gear, gear doors, drop tanks, and under-wing ordnance for multiple configurations.

- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.
Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.
Excellent (8/10)

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.
Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.
Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.
Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
