Description
A striking and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4B Phantom II operated by the famous VF-84 “Jolly Rogers” during the Vietnam War. Released as part of the Hobby Master Air Power Series, HA1968 depicts aircraft AG206 while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence in the Gulf of Tonkin during 1965.
VF-84 adopted the celebrated “Jolly Rogers” name and skull-and-crossbones insignia following the disestablishment of an earlier squadron that had carried the same identity. The unit subsequently became one of the most recognisable fighter squadrons in United States naval aviation.
During 1965, VF-84 deployed aboard USS Independence for combat operations in Southeast Asia. Its F-4B Phantoms flew fighter protection, interception and strike-support missions from the Gulf of Tonkin, contributing to the intensive carrier air campaign conducted over Vietnam.
Aircraft AG206 is reproduced in the high-visibility United States Navy finish of the period, combining a light grey upper surface with a white underside. Prominent NAVY lettering, colourful squadron insignia, yellow trim and the black-and-white Jolly Rogers tail marking create one of the most distinctive schemes carried by an early Phantom II.
Developed as a fleet defence fighter for the United States Navy, the F-4 Phantom II first flew in 1958. Its powerful twin engines, two-person cockpit and ability to carry a wide range of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons made it exceptionally versatile. The aircraft later served extensively with the United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force and numerous international operators.
This Hobby Master release is particularly appealing to collectors of Vietnam War aircraft, United States Navy aviation and famous fighter squadrons. The model features extensive diecast construction, detailed front and rear cockpits beneath separately positionable canopies, raised carrier-style wingtips and a comprehensive selection of removable external stores. It is supplied with its original Hobby Master presentation display stand.
