Description

A distinctive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Messerschmitt Me 262A flown by Luftwaffe fighter ace Major Rudolf Sinner during the closing months of the Second World War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, US35705 depicts “Green 1” of III./JG 7 “Nowotny” while operating from Brandenburg-Briest in Germany during March 1945.

Jagdgeschwader 7 was the Luftwaffe's first operational jet fighter wing and became closely associated with the revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262. Flying from bases within Germany, the unit attempted to counter the increasingly powerful formations of Allied bombers and escorting fighters attacking strategic targets during the final stages of the war.

Major Rudolf Sinner was an experienced Luftwaffe fighter pilot who had previously served with JG 27 and JG 54 before converting to the Me 262. His aircraft carried a particularly striking late-war camouflage scheme, combining bright green and brown upper surfaces with prominent black-and-white national markings and the individual identification “Green 1”.

The Me 262 was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Although originally considered for use as a high-speed bomber, its exceptional performance made it far better suited to the interceptor role. Powered by two Junkers Jumo 004 turbojet engines and armed with four heavy 30 mm cannon, the Me 262 was substantially faster than the piston-engined fighters it encountered.

Despite its advanced design and formidable performance, the Me 262 entered service too late and in insufficient numbers to alter the outcome of the war. Engine reliability problems, shortages of fuel and trained pilots, and repeated attacks against its airfields restricted its operational impact. Nevertheless, its swept-wing appearance, twin jet nacelles and exceptional speed ensured its place as one of the most historically significant aircraft of the Second World War.

Limited to 2,140 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of Luftwaffe aircraft, early military jets and late-war aviation subjects. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, detailed engine intake and exhaust nacelles, four accurately represented cannon ports and underside shell-casing ejection outlets. Further features include detailed wheel wells, an intricately rendered cockpit with pilot figure, authentic late-war camouflage and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
