JG54, known as "Grünherz" (Green Hearts), was formed in Austria in April 1940 and comprised mainly Austrian volunteers. During the Battle of Britain, the unit operated from airfields near Calais and Boulogne. Among its pilots was Waldemar Wübke, nicknamed "Heine," who flew a distinctive Bf 109E-3 marked "Yellow 11" with 9./JG54. Though not widely known, Wübke had a quiet but effective career, achieving 15 aerial victories by the end of the war.
He later flew the Fw 190D-9 as Staffelkapitän with 1./JV44, providing protection for Galland’s Me 262 jet squadrons, and eventually attained the rank of Hauptmann.
