Description

A highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast model replicating a pioneering reconnaissance jet from early USAF jet operations. This model by Corgi (AA34702) represents the Martin RB-57 Canberra as operated by the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW), which stood as the very first operational unit to re-equip with the RB-57A while stationed at Shaw AFB in South Carolina. The operational history of the RB-57A with the USAF was destined to be relatively brief, initially hampered by issues with its J65-BW-5 engines that tended to burn oil and fill the cockpit with smoke, forcing a production reversion back to the Wright Aeronautical Corporation for the J65-W-1 engine variant. Although the last of 67 RB-57As was accepted by the USAF in September of 1954, a high accident rate caused the aircraft to be grounded for much of 1955. The 10th TRW eventually began re-equipping with the Douglas RB-66B Destroyer in April of 1957, ultimately relinquishing their final RB-57A units in November 1958. Designed originally as a successor to the de Havilland Mosquito, the English Electric Canberra first flew on May 13, 1949, utilizing its state-of-the-art aerodynamic shape and high-speed, high-altitude performance instead of defensive armaments to avoid airborne conflict altogether. The highly adaptable platform went on to set a world altitude record in 1957 and served for an astonishing 57 years before retiring in 2006.

Featured within Corgi's Aviation Archive Collector Series, this 1:72 scale Canberra replica is one of the largest jet models available in this scale, matching a World War II heavy bomber in physical presence. The model is engineered with exceptional precision, showcasing a massive wing assembly detailed with long integrated engine nacelles that reveal fine turbofan and engine exhaust details at the rear. The undercarriage features robust landing gear components equipped with an actuator, designed to be easy to install and securely lock into place for steady ground display. Additional high-fidelity structural features include a transparent nose bomb-aimer's window, a large bubble fighter-style cockpit canopy, and an included pilot figure to complete the presentation.
