Ernst Udet, initially rejected by the German Army, joined the Air Service in 1915 and became one of WWI’s top aces with 62 victories, commanding Jastas 4, 11, and 37. His Fokker D.VII featured the slogans "LO!" and "Du Doch Nicht!!" in tribute and defiance. Postwar, Udet was a stunt pilot before joining the Luftwaffe, rising to Generaloberst. Blamed for Luftwaffe failures, he tragically took his own life in 1941.
