The Junkers Ju 88, originally designed as a fast "Schnell Bomber," became one of the Luftwaffe's most versatile and effective aircraft of WWII. In its C-6 variant, it was adapted as a heavy night fighter, playing a key role in Germany's nocturnal air defence. Unlike earlier single-engine fighters, the Ju 88 offered greater range, speed, and firepower, making it a formidable threat to RAF bombers.
The Luftwaffe's main Mediterranean base at Catania, Sicily, hosted the Ju 88 night fighters of I./NJG2. In the summer of 1942, these aircraft were recalled to Catania, likely to bolster defences ahead of a potential Axis invasion of Malta, as Allied night raids intensified.
