Description

A highly detailed 1:72 scale medium bomber replica tracking a primary mainstay of daylight WWII operations. This diecast model by Corgi (AA38801) replicates the Dornier Do 17Z variant operating under the Luftwaffe unit I./KG 76 based at Beauvais-Tille in Northern France. Originally built as a prototype in 1934 to fulfill a Lufthansa requirement for a 6-passenger high-speed mailplane, the design was rejected partly due to its slim fuselage, which later earned it the famous nickname "The Flying Pencil". Recognizing its military potential, developers modified the specifications into a light medium bomber and long-range reconnaissance asset, refining its features following combat experience gained during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. By the 1940 Battle of Britain, the definitive Do 17Z variant saw extensive service, utilizing its low-altitude maneuverability, speed, and forward-set cockpit to conduct surprise bombing attacks and outrun defending fighters. This specific model replicates a 1. Staffel aircraft deployed on daylight bombing raids over the British Isles in September 1940, featuring temporary white bar identification markings.

Featured in Corgi's Aviation Archive Collector Series, this 1:72 scale model delivers an almost sculpted look, defined by a seamless structural join between the high-set wings and the slim airframe. The forward section features a fully glazed nose and a large birdcage canopy that offers a completely clear view of each interior crew figure. At the rear, the twin tail configuration highlights fine details including a pair of photo-etched dorsal-mounted antennas alongside clearly visible elevator trim tabs and mass balance counter-weights mounted to the simulated fabric-stretched elevators. This limited-edition release serves as an exceptional historical centerpiece for sophisticated military collections.
