Description
A faithful 1:72 scale replication celebrating an exceptional "Ace in a Day" twin-boom heavy fighter. This diecast model by Corgi (AA36613) replicates the Lockheed P-38J Lightning (#44-23590), famously named "Scrapiron IV". First flown on January 27, 1939, to satisfy a USAAC requirement for a high-performance fighter, the P-38 featured a highly recognizable layout with twin-booms, twin turbo-supercharged engines, a central pilot pod, contra-rotating propellers, and tricycle landing gear. Arriving in England in April 1944, the 367th Fighter Group transitioned to this dual-engine fighter at RAF Stoney Cross. On August 25, 1944, over France, Laurence "Scrappy" Blumer piloted this aircraft into a savage dogfight, scoring two FW190 victories on his first pass and an additional three within fifteen minutes to earn the title "the fastest ace in a day" and the Distinguished Service Cross. Dubbed the "Fork-tailed devil" by adversaries, the Lightning was respected for its quiet operation due to muffled twin turbo-superchargers and its lethal nose-clustered weapons bay.
Part of Corgi's Aviation Archive Collector Series, this 1:72 scale model features accurate separately applied turbocharger details and twin engine radiator scoops mounted directly to the booms. The central pod is built with a large cockpit canopy that provides an unobstructed view of the pilot figure and rear-bay radio equipment components. Replicating a heavy fighter-bomber configuration, the nose features a precise weapons cluster showing four machine gun barrels surrounding a central 20mm cannon barrel to recreate the devastating "buzz saw" strafing layout. Complete with modular landing gear featuring textured tread tires and easy-to-install gear doors for clean ground display, this limited edition serves as a definitive historical artifact.
