Description
A powerful and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of the rocket-armed Hawker Typhoon Mk I flown by leading Typhoon ace John Robert Baldwin during 1944. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA36514 depicts aircraft PD521, carrying the individual marking “JBII”, while serving with RAF No. 146 Wing.
John Robert Baldwin became one of the Royal Air Force's most successful Hawker Typhoon pilots. After completing his first operational tour, he returned to frontline flying and assumed command of No. 146 Wing, leading formations of Typhoons on demanding ground-attack missions across north-western Europe.
Following the Allied landings in Normandy, Typhoon units played an increasingly important role in supporting ground forces. Their combination of speed, heavy cannon armament and externally carried rockets or bombs made them highly effective against enemy vehicles, transport routes, defensive positions and other battlefield targets.
Baldwin's operational records indicate that he flew a substantial number of sorties while commanding the wing. His reputation was such that more than one Typhoon was configured for his use, allowing him to select an aircraft equipped either with bombs or rocket projectiles depending on the requirements of the mission.
Aircraft PD521 was marked “JBII” and is represented carrying rocket projectiles beneath its wings. The model recreates its olive green and grey upper-surface camouflage, contrasting underside, yellow leading-edge recognition markings and prominent RAF roundels. Baldwin's individual initials are displayed on the forward fuselage.
Designed by Sydney Camm, the Hawker Typhoon was originally intended as a high-performance interceptor. Although early development was affected by engine and structural problems, the aircraft found its ideal role as a low-level fighter-bomber. Its four 20 mm cannon, powerful Napier Sabre engine and ability to carry rockets or bombs made it one of the most formidable Allied ground-attack aircraft of the war.
Limited to only 800 pieces worldwide, this is a particularly scarce Corgi Typhoon release. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, a detailed cockpit with pilot figure, rotating four-bladed propeller, prominent underwing rocket armament, authentic JBII markings and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
