Description
An impressive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast tribute to the Eurofighter Typhoon during its first major combat deployment with the Royal Air Force. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA36406 depicts single-seat Eurofighter Typhoon ZJ933 in the markings of RAF No. 11 Squadron during Operation Ellamy over Libya in 2011.
Operation Ellamy was the British contribution to the international military intervention over Libya. RAF Typhoons deployed to Gioia del Colle Air Base in southern Italy, from where they helped enforce the no-fly zone over Libya. The operation represented the Typhoon's first combat deployment, with the aircraft initially undertaking air defence patrols before demonstrating its developing multi-role capabilities.
No. 11 Squadron had reformed as a frontline Typhoon unit at RAF Coningsby in 2007. During the Libyan deployment, the squadron helped maintain air patrols over the operational area, supporting the wider coalition effort. Aircraft ZJ933 is reproduced with the squadron's distinctive tail insignia, low-visibility Royal Air Force markings and operational grey finish.
Developed through a multinational programme involving the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain, the Eurofighter Typhoon was designed as an exceptionally agile air-superiority fighter. Its instantly recognisable configuration combines a sharply swept delta wing with forward-mounted canards, twin Eurojet EJ200 engines and a digital fly-by-wire control system. Although originally introduced to the RAF primarily for air-to-air combat, the Typhoon steadily evolved into a capable multi-role aircraft able to undertake air policing, precision strike and high-intensity combat operations.
Limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of modern Royal Air Force aircraft and operational aviation subjects. The model features a heavyweight diecast construction, detailed cockpit with pilot figure, clear canopy, synchronised rotating canards and a positionable dorsal airbrake. Further detailing includes a comprehensive selection of operational stores, finely reproduced panel lines, sharply defined squadron markings and detailed twin exhaust nozzles with visible afterburner sections. The model is presented on its original Corgi Aviation Archive display stand.
