Description
A highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Fairey Swordfish Mk I serving aboard HMS Biter during Operation Torch. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA36311 depicts aircraft V4448 of Royal Navy No. 833 Naval Air Squadron while operating from Gibraltar during November 1942.
Operation Torch was the major Allied amphibious invasion of French North Africa. Royal Navy carriers and their aircraft were tasked with protecting the invasion fleet, supporting the landings and countering the threat posed by enemy submarines and aircraft operating throughout the western Mediterranean.
No. 833 Naval Air Squadron operated the Swordfish from the escort carrier HMS Biter. Its crews flew anti-submarine patrols and maritime reconnaissance missions, helping to protect the naval task force during the approach to the invasion beaches and throughout the early stages of the operation.
Aircraft V4448 is reproduced in the muted camouflage applied to Fleet Air Arm aircraft during the period. The model carries Royal Navy roundels and unit markings, along with the Swordfish's characteristic fixed undercarriage, open crew positions and extensive interplane rigging.
Designed by the Fairey Aviation Company, the Swordfish first flew in 1934. Although its biplane construction appeared outdated by the beginning of the Second World War, its dependable handling, ability to operate from short carrier decks and capacity to carry torpedoes, bombs and depth charges made it exceptionally versatile.
Limited to only 1,000 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of Fleet Air Arm aircraft, Operation Torch subjects and British naval aviation. The model features simulated fabric-covered surfaces, fine structural rigging, a detailed three-man cockpit, pivoting defensive machine gun, external stores and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
