Description
A striking and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Royal Air Force SEPECAT Jaguar GR.Mk 1 deployed during the 1991 Gulf War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA35402 depicts aircraft XZ364, named “Sandman”, of RAF No. 54 Squadron while operating from RAF Muharraq in Bahrain.
RAF Jaguars were deployed to the Gulf as part of Operation Granby, the British contribution to the coalition campaign against Iraqi forces. The aircraft undertook demanding low-level reconnaissance and strike missions in support of coalition ground and air operations.
Aircraft XZ364 carried the individual name “Sandman” and was finished in the pale desert-pink camouflage associated with RAF combat aircraft during the campaign. The model reproduces its subdued national markings, aircraft serial, mission artwork and operational stores.
The SEPECAT Jaguar was developed jointly by Britain and France and first flew in 1968. Although originally conceived partly as an advanced trainer, it evolved into an effective supersonic strike aircraft capable of operating at low altitude and from relatively austere airfields.
The Jaguar’s combination of speed, agility and weapons-carrying capability made it particularly valuable during the Gulf War. RAF aircraft carried out reconnaissance, battlefield interdiction and ground-attack missions throughout the campaign.
Limited to 3,200 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of Gulf War aircraft and modern Royal Air Force subjects. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, movable elevators, simulated engine heat shielding, underwing fuel tanks and ordnance, authentic Sandman markings, removable landing gear and the original presentation display stand.
