A highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Curtiss P-40E Warhawk operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the Second World War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA35202 depicts aircraft “JZ” of RNZAF No. 15 Squadron, associated with Flight Lieutenant Johnnie Gibson at Whenuapai, New Zealand, during 1942.
Johnnie Gibson entered No. 15 Squadron as an experienced fighter pilot with victories previously achieved while flying Hawker Hurricanes. He subsequently flew the P-40 in the Pacific theatre and claimed his final aerial victory over Rabaul during January 1944.
The aircraft is reproduced in a standard RAF-style desert camouflage scheme, combining sand and green upper surfaces with contrasting undersides. Prominent RNZAF roundels, the white individual code “JZ” and the New Zealand fin flash distinguish the aircraft from contemporary British-operated P-40s.
The Curtiss P-40 was developed as a rugged pursuit aircraft and first flew in 1938. Although its high-altitude performance was limited compared with some later fighters, it possessed strong diving characteristics, heavy armament and an exceptionally durable airframe.
Known as the Kittyhawk in Commonwealth service, the P-40 served extensively across North Africa, the Mediterranean, China and the Pacific. Its dependability and ability to operate from relatively undeveloped airfields made it particularly valuable to Allied forces in remote theatres.
Limited to 2,700 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of RNZAF aviation and Pacific War aircraft. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, a detailed cockpit beneath a clear canopy, rotating propeller, authentic JZ markings, removable landing gear and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
