Description
A distinctive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Gloster Meteor F.Mk 8 operated by RAF No. 601 Squadron from RAF North Weald. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA35002 depicts one of the Royal Air Force’s principal post-war jet fighters in striking squadron markings.
The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet aircraft to enter operational squadron service and the only Allied jet fighter to see active service during the Second World War. Its introduction represented a major transition from piston-engined fighters to the new generation of turbojet-powered military aircraft.
The F.Mk 8 became the most numerous and successful single-seat Meteor variant. It incorporated a revised fuselage, improved tail assembly, more powerful engines and an ejection seat, providing better performance and handling than earlier versions.
No. 601 Squadron operated Meteor F.8 aircraft from RAF North Weald during the post-war period. The model recreates the aircraft in a green and grey camouflage scheme with prominent RAF roundels, vivid red and black squadron markings along the fuselage and a striking striped tail.
Powered by two Rolls-Royce Derwent engines and armed with four 20 mm cannon mounted in the nose, the Meteor F.8 served as an important day interceptor within Fighter Command. Although soon overtaken by swept-wing designs, it remained an important frontline aircraft during the early years of the Cold War.
Limited to 2,700 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of early British jets and post-war Royal Air Force aircraft. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, detailed engine nacelles, a clear cockpit canopy, removable landing gear, authentic No. 601 Squadron markings and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
