Description
A substantial and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Royal Air Force Boeing Chinook HC.Mk 1 associated with the famous Bravo Two Zero patrol during the 1991 Gulf War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Legends range, AA34209 depicts a Chinook operated by RAF No. 7 and No. 18 Squadrons in Saudi Arabia during Operation Granby.
During the evening of 22 January 1991, a British Special Air Service patrol using the call sign “Bravo Two Zero” was inserted into Iraq by RAF Chinook. The patrol had been tasked with observing a strategically important supply route and disrupting communications between Baghdad and Jordan during the opening stages of the Gulf War.
The Chinook played an essential role in transporting personnel, equipment and supplies throughout the conflict. Its combination of heavy-lift capability, operational range and ability to land in demanding environments made it particularly valuable for supporting special forces and other units operating far beyond established bases.
This aircraft is reproduced in an unusual desert camouflage scheme consisting of a pale sand base covered with an intricate darker disruptive pattern. Low-visibility RAF roundels and squadron markings are applied across the fuselage, while the large tandem rotor arrangement and rear loading ramp recreate the Chinook's unmistakable appearance.
Developed as a turbine-powered replacement for earlier heavy transport helicopters, the Boeing CH-47 Chinook first flew in 1961. Its tandem rotor configuration provides exceptional lifting capability while eliminating the need for a conventional tail rotor. The type has served extensively in troop transport, battlefield resupply, casualty evacuation, special forces support and heavy-lift operations.
This impressive Corgi release is particularly appealing to collectors of Gulf War subjects, Royal Air Force helicopters and British special forces history. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, detailed cockpit glazing, a large opening rear loading ramp and an extensively rendered cargo compartment. It is supplied with 12 rotor blades forming two complete sets, allowing the aircraft to be configured with either drooping ground-display blades or upward-curving in-flight blades.
