Description
A substantial and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 50 operated by the South African Air Force during 1970. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA34106 depicts an aircraft of SAAF No. 24 Squadron while based at Waterkloof in South Africa.
South Africa was the only overseas customer for the Blackburn Buccaneer and ordered 16 aircraft for the South African Air Force. Designated the Buccaneer S.Mk 50, these aircraft were based on the British S.Mk 2 but incorporated modifications suited to land-based operations in the demanding southern African environment.
No. 24 Squadron operated the Buccaneer from Waterkloof and used the aircraft for maritime strike, ground attack and long-range weapons delivery. Its combination of high-speed, low-level performance and substantial weapons capacity made it a particularly capable strike aircraft.
The S.Mk 50 differed from Royal Navy Buccaneers by omitting the hydraulic wing-folding equipment required for carrier operations. It was also equipped with powerful Bristol Siddeley BS.605 auxiliary rocket engines, which provided additional thrust when operating from high-altitude airfields with heavy weapons or fuel loads.
The model recreates the aircraft in a distinctive overall blue finish with South African national insignia, No. 24 Squadron markings and the individual aircraft number 414. Its broad wings, prominent engine nacelles and large rear airbrake capture the unmistakable appearance of the Buccaneer.
Originally developed as a low-level naval strike aircraft, the Blackburn Buccaneer first flew in 1958. Its exceptionally strong airframe, boundary-layer control system and stable low-altitude handling allowed it to penetrate hostile airspace while carrying conventional weapons, anti-ship missiles or other specialised ordnance.
Limited to 2,100 pieces worldwide, this Corgi release is particularly appealing to collectors of South African military aviation and uncommon Buccaneer variants. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, finely reproduced vortex generators, a detailed two-seat cockpit, an articulated rear airbrake, a positionable arrestor hook, removable landing gear and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.

- One closed undercarriage accessory has broken pins, which remain inside the airframe.
- Refuel probe has previously broken and been repaired; the repair is quite discreet and hard to spot, but care should be taken when fitting it to the airframe.
- Despite the noted accessory issues, the model still displays very well.
Box condition - Near Mint (9/10)
- Box is in near mint condition for its age, with light wear present.
