Description
A substantial and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Royal Air Force Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2B during the final year of the aircraft's operational service. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA34105 depicts Buccaneer XX895 of RAF No. 208 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland during 1993.
Aircraft XX895 originally entered RAF service during the late 1970s and served with several units throughout its career. It later joined No. 208 Squadron, one of the RAF's principal Buccaneer units, and remained operational until the squadron retired the type at the end of 1993.
No. 208 Squadron had a long history dating back to the early years of military aviation. Its distinctive Sphinx badge reflected earlier service in Egypt and the Western Desert and became closely associated with the unit's later Buccaneers.
The model recreates XX895 in the subdued light grey finish adopted by RAF Buccaneers during their later service. Low-visibility national markings and the prominent winged Sphinx tail artwork provide the main identifying features, while external fuel tanks and stores reflect the aircraft's operational maritime-strike configuration.
Originally developed as a low-level naval strike aircraft, the Blackburn Buccaneer first flew in 1958. Its exceptionally strong airframe, powerful twin engines and advanced aerodynamic design allowed it to fly quickly and smoothly at very low altitude. Following the withdrawal of the Royal Navy's conventional aircraft carriers, the type continued serving with the RAF in maritime strike, reconnaissance and attack roles.
Limited to 2,700 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of late-service RAF aircraft and British Cold War aviation. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, finely reproduced vortex generators, simulated metallic leading edges, a detailed cockpit, articulated rear airbrake, positionable arrestor hook, external stores and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
