Description
A substantial and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Royal Air Force Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2B deployed during the 1991 Gulf War. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA34104 depicts aircraft XX885 of RAF No. 12 Squadron while operating from RAF Muharraq in Bahrain.
RAF Buccaneers were deployed to the Gulf during Operation Granby to provide laser target designation support for Tornado strike aircraft. Their arrival allowed British aircraft to deliver precision-guided weapons more accurately against heavily defended targets.
Aircraft XX885 carried the individual identification letter “L” and operated alongside the small force of veteran Buccaneers sent to the region. During the later stages of the campaign, Buccaneers also released their own laser-guided bombs against selected targets.
The model recreates the pale desert-pink finish applied to RAF aircraft during the Gulf War. Subdued national markings, individual aircraft codes and operational artwork contrast with the otherwise restrained camouflage, while external stores reflect the Buccaneer's deployed strike configuration.
Originally designed as a low-level naval strike aircraft, the Blackburn Buccaneer combined an exceptionally strong airframe with powerful twin engines and advanced aerodynamic features. Its stable low-level handling and heavy weapons capacity allowed the aircraft to remain operationally effective long after its introduction.
Limited to 3,900 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of Gulf War aircraft and Royal Air Force strike subjects. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, detailed cockpit glazing, finely reproduced vortex generators, an articulated rear airbrake, positionable arrestor hook, external stores and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
