Description
A substantial and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Royal Navy Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2 serving aboard HMS Victorious during 1965. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA34103 depicts aircraft XN981 of No. 801 Naval Air Squadron.
The Buccaneer was originally developed to meet a Royal Navy requirement for a powerful, carrier-based strike aircraft capable of penetrating hostile defences at extremely low altitude. Its principal role was to attack enemy warships using conventional or nuclear weapons.
No. 801 Naval Air Squadron reformed at RAF Lossiemouth in October 1965 after converting from the earlier Buccaneer S.Mk 1 to the more capable S.Mk 2. The upgraded aircraft offered more powerful engines and improved operational performance.
Aircraft XN981 is reproduced in the dark blue-grey finish associated with early Royal Navy Buccaneers. White undersides, Fleet Air Arm roundels, prominent Royal Navy lettering and the individual aircraft number 234 create a striking carrier-based appearance.
The Blackburn Buccaneer's strong airframe, boundary-layer control system and powerful twin engines allowed it to operate effectively from British aircraft carriers. Its ability to remain stable at very low altitude also made it an exceptionally capable maritime strike platform.
Limited to 3,400 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of Royal Navy aviation and early Buccaneer variants. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, detailed cockpit glazing, finely reproduced vortex generators, an articulated rear airbrake, positionable arrestor hook, robust landing gear and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.
