Description

A distinctive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Panavia Tornado IDS operated by the German Bundesmarine's Marinefliegergeschwader 1. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA33608 depicts an MFG 1 aircraft based at Schleswig in Germany during 1987.

Marinefliegergeschwader 1 became the first German naval aviation unit to receive the Tornado, replacing its earlier Lockheed F-104 Starfighters. The new aircraft provided a significant improvement in maritime strike capability, avionics, navigation and weapons delivery.

German naval Tornados were tasked with attacking hostile shipping and supporting NATO maritime operations in the Baltic and North Sea regions. Their high-speed, low-level performance and ability to carry anti-ship weapons made them particularly well suited to this demanding role.

The model recreates the aircraft in a dark blue-grey maritime finish with German national markings, MFG 1 insignia and the prominent “Marine” identification associated with Bundesmarine aviation. External fuel tanks and underwing stores complete the operational appearance.

Developed jointly by the United Kingdom, West Germany and Italy, the Panavia Tornado first flew in 1974. Its variable-geometry wings allowed it to combine efficient high-speed, low-level flight with improved take-off and landing performance. The IDS variant served as a versatile strike, reconnaissance and maritime attack aircraft.

Limited to 2,200 pieces worldwide, this release is particularly appealing to collectors of German naval aviation and Cold War aircraft. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, variable-geometry wings, synchronised movable elevators, simulated engine exhaust heat shielding, positionable cockpit canopy, external fuel tanks and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
