Description
A highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero associated with the Imperial Japanese Navy attack on Pearl Harbor. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA33108 depicts Zero AI-154, flown by Takashi Hirano from the aircraft carrier Akagi on 7th December 1941.
The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was intended to neutralise the United States Pacific Fleet and prevent American interference with Japanese operations across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Aircraft launched from several Japanese carriers attacked naval vessels, airfields and military installations across the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
Hirano's aircraft formed part of the force directed against Hickam Field, where American aircraft and facilities were subjected to repeated strafing and bombing attacks. The model represents the Zero in the pale early-war finish commonly associated with Japanese naval aircraft during the opening stages of the Pacific War.
Prominent red Hinomaru national markings are applied across the wings and fuselage, while the AI-154 identification appears on the tail. The clean finish, large canopy and exposed radial engine create the instantly recognisable appearance of the early A6M2 Zero.
Designed as a lightweight carrier fighter, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero combined exceptional manoeuvrability and long range with a powerful armament of cannon and machine guns. During the opening campaigns of the Pacific War, its agility and experienced pilots gave it a formidable reputation against many opposing Allied fighters.
