Description
A historically significant and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of de Havilland Mosquito FB.VI HX922, flown by Group Captain Percy Pickard during Operation Jericho on 18th February 1944. Released within the Corgi Aviation Archive Legends range, AA32810 depicts aircraft EG-F, popularly identified as “F for Freddie”, during the low-level raid against Amiens Prison in occupied France.
Operation Jericho was undertaken by Mosquitoes of No. 140 Wing, comprising No. 21 Squadron RAF, No. 464 Squadron RAAF and No. 487 Squadron RNZAF. The mission was intended to breach the prison walls and enable members of the French Resistance and other detainees to escape before threatened executions could take place.
Group Captain Percy Pickard commanded No. 140 Wing and flew HX922 with Flight Lieutenant John Broadley as navigator. The aircraft remained over the target area while Pickard assessed the results of the attack and determined whether the reserve formation should be called forward.
HX922 was attacked by German fighters shortly after leaving the target area and was shot down near Amiens. Both Pickard and Broadley were killed, and their loss became closely associated with the courage and sacrifice demonstrated during the operation.
Corgi marketed AA32810 as an aircraft of No. 487 Squadron RNZAF. Historical references generally associate HX922 and its EG-F code with No. 464 Squadron RAAF during the raid. As both squadrons served together within No. 140 Wing, that wider formation has been used as the principal unit identification in this listing.
The model reproduces HX922 in the distinctive grey and green camouflage carried by RAF tactical aircraft during 1944. The pale lower surfaces, RAF roundels, red identification stencilling and EG-F squadron codes contrast with the broad twin-engine airframe.
Constructed primarily from moulded wood, the de Havilland Mosquito combined exceptional speed with the payload capacity of a medium bomber. Its adaptability allowed the aircraft to serve as a bomber, night fighter, photographic reconnaissance platform, maritime-strike aircraft and low-level fighter-bomber.
The FB.VI carried four machine guns in the nose and four 20 mm cannon beneath the forward fuselage. Bombs, rockets or external fuel tanks could also be carried beneath the wings, giving the aircraft considerable flexibility during precision low-level operations.
This Corgi release features substantial diecast construction, a detailed cockpit beneath a clear canopy, twin rotating propellers and finely reproduced engine nacelles. Removable landing gear allows the aircraft to be configured for ground display, while the transparent Aviation Archive Legends stand provides an alternative in-flight presentation.
