Description

A distinctive and highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of Supermarine Spitfire Mk VB EP706, operated by RAF No. 249 Squadron during the defence of Malta. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA31902 depicts the aircraft carrying the individual code “T-L” and associated with Squadron Leader Maurice Stephens at Takali during 1942.

No. 249 Squadron became one of the principal fighter units involved in the defence of Malta. Its pilots operated under exceptionally demanding conditions, facing repeated attacks by German and Italian aircraft while protecting the strategically important Mediterranean island.

EP706 is reproduced in a distinctive desert and Mediterranean colour scheme, combining sand and brown upper surfaces with blue-grey areas and lighter undersides. RAF roundels, the T-L identification code and a bright red propeller spinner complete its operational appearance.

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk V was introduced as an improved development of the earlier Battle of Britain variants. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine, it offered improved performance and became one of the most widely produced Spitfire versions of the Second World War.

Spitfire Mk Vs served across Britain, Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean. Their combination of speed, manoeuvrability and cannon armament made them invaluable during the intense aerial fighting over Malta.

This Corgi release features substantial diecast construction, simulated fabric-textured control surfaces, a detailed cockpit beneath a clear canopy and a rotating three-bladed propeller. Additional features include removable landing gear, wing-mounted radiator detailing and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand.

Grading

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
