Description

A highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast representation of Josef “Pips” Priller’s distinctive Messerschmitt Bf 109E during the latter stages of the Battle of Britain. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive Collector Series, AA28001 depicts “Yellow 1” of Luftwaffe 6./JG 51, operating from Mardyck in northern France during October 1940.

Josef Priller was already an experienced Luftwaffe fighter pilot by the time the Battle of Britain began. Flying with Jagdgeschwader 51, he took part in the intensive aerial fighting over the English Channel and southern England, where the Messerschmitt Bf 109 frequently encountered RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes. Priller would eventually become one of Germany’s most successful fighter pilots, building a reputation particularly associated with combat against the Supermarine Spitfire.

The aircraft is presented in a striking late-1940 scheme featuring a bright yellow engine cowling, yellow tactical number and yellow rudder identification markings. These prominent recognition colours contrast with the darker mottled camouflage applied across the fuselage and upper surfaces. The black-and-white Balkenkreuz national markings and individual unit insignia further enhance the historically distinctive appearance of this Battle of Britain fighter.

Designed in response to the Luftwaffe’s requirement for a modern single-seat fighter and interceptor, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 first flew in 1935. Its all-metal construction, enclosed cockpit and retractable undercarriage represented a major advance over many earlier fighter designs. Powered by an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz engine, the Bf 109 combined strong performance with a compact airframe and remained in continuous development throughout the Second World War.

Limited to 1,800 pieces worldwide, this release is an appealing subject for collectors of Luftwaffe aircraft, Battle of Britain models and historically significant fighter aces. The model features heavyweight diecast construction, a detailed cockpit beneath a clear canopy, rotating three-bladed propeller, finely reproduced panel lines and authentic period markings. It is supplied with its original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation stand and accompanying components.

Grading

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
