Description

This pre-owned 1:72 scale Corgi model recreates English Electric Lightning F.2 XN768, coded S, of Royal Air Force No.92 Squadron in its striking natural-metal display finish. It is offered as a complete example with clearly disclosed condition issues, including paint marks, a possible repair around the underside of the nose and part of the front undercarriage that appears to have been glued inside its port.

No.92 Squadron had established a distinguished aerobatic tradition before the arrival of the Lightning. While flying the Hawker Hunter F.6, the squadron served as Fighter Command's official display team and became widely known as the Blue Diamonds.

The squadron began converting to the English Electric Lightning F.2 in 1963 and continued demonstrating the RAF's new supersonic interceptor at major public events. Its polished metal surfaces, deep blue fin and spine and colourful squadron markings created one of the most recognisable Lightning schemes of the period.

XN768 was an early F.2 airframe, construction number 95121, carrying the individual code S. The aircraft appeared with No.92 Squadron at the Farnborough Air Show in September 1964 as part of the squadron's impressive Lightning display formation.

Unlike many of the squadron's other Lightning F.2 aircraft, XN768 was not converted to the later F.2A specification. It therefore retained the rounded fin, smaller ventral tank and original wing arrangement associated with the earlier variant.

Powered by two vertically stacked Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets, the Lightning was designed for rapid point-defence interception. Its exceptional acceleration and climb performance allowed RAF pilots to respond quickly to high-altitude threats, while the F.2 combined twin 30 mm ADEN cannon with two Firestreak air-to-air missiles.

This substantial Aviation Archive release combines extensive diecast construction with permanently applied markings and detailed surface features. It includes configurable landing gear, Firestreak missiles, a detailed cockpit with open or closed canopy options, a separate access ladder and the original curved presentation stand.

Grading

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
