Description
A distinctive 1:144 scale diecast representation of Short Sunderland III G-AGKY “Hungerford”, converted for passenger use as one of BOAC's Hythe-class flying boats. Released as part of the Corgi Aviation Archive range, model 48802 captures the transitional period when former military flying boats helped restore long-distance civil aviation during and immediately after the Second World War.
G-AGKY was originally constructed as RAF Sunderland Mk III ML789 before being transferred to BOAC and converted for passenger transport. The aircraft was delivered to the airline during July 1944 and received the civil registration G-AGKY together with the individual name “Hungerford”.
The Hythe-class conversion removed much of the Sunderland's military equipment and introduced a passenger interior suitable for long over-water journeys. BOAC used these aircraft on routes linking Britain with destinations around Africa, the Middle East and Asia at a time when suitable land airports remained limited.
The model is presented in BOAC's restrained civil flying-boat finish with a white upper fuselage, polished lower hull, dark blue airline markings and the registration G-AGKY. The broad wing, deep boat-shaped fuselage and stabilising wingtip floats retain the unmistakable profile of the original Sunderland.
Developed as a maritime patrol and reconnaissance flying boat, the Short Sunderland first flew in 1937. Its large hull allowed it to operate directly from water, while four radial engines provided the endurance required for extended patrols and long-distance transport operations.
This Corgi release features extensive diecast construction, authentic Hungerford markings, clear cockpit glazing and permanently printed cabin windows. Additional details include four rotating propellers, stabilising wing floats, removable beaching gear and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation display stand.
