Description
A substantial first-issue 1:144 scale diecast representation of the Short S.25 Sunderland V in Royal Air Force Coastal Command markings. Released as part of the early Corgi Aviation Archive range, model 48801 captures the imposing appearance of Britain's famous maritime patrol flying boat.
The Sunderland was developed to meet an Air Ministry requirement for a long-range general-reconnaissance flying boat. Its large boat-shaped hull allowed it to operate directly from sheltered stretches of water, while its four engines provided the range needed for extended patrols over the Atlantic and other maritime theatres.
RAF Coastal Command used Sunderland flying boats for anti-submarine patrols, convoy protection, reconnaissance, air-sea rescue and general maritime support. Their endurance allowed crews to remain over distant areas of ocean for long periods while searching for enemy submarines and surface vessels.
The Sunderland V was the final major production version and replaced the earlier Bristol Pegasus engines with American Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines. The improved powerplants supported continued RAF operation of the Sunderland during the closing stages of the Second World War and the post-war period.
This model is presented in a general RAF Coastal Command scheme rather than markings attributed to a specific serial or squadron. National insignia, military identification markings, defensive gun positions and the characteristic wing-mounted stabilising floats complete its operational appearance.
The model features extensive diecast construction, a transparent cockpit, detailed defensive positions, four rotating propellers, outboard stabilising floats, removable beaching gear and the original multi-position Corgi Aviation Archive display stand.
