Description

An impressive 1:144 scale diecast representation of Boeing 377 Stratocruiser G-ALSD “Cassiopeia”, operated by the British Overseas Airways Corporation on prestigious transatlantic services. Released within Corgi's Aviation Archive Classic Propliners range, model 48105 recreates one of the most luxurious British-operated passenger aircraft of the early post-war period.

G-ALSD was delivered to BOAC during December 1949 and received the name “Cassiopeia”. The aircraft was used primarily on long-distance routes, including services linking London and New York, at a time when an Atlantic crossing by air was still regarded as a prestigious and expensive experience.

The model reproduces BOAC's polished natural-metal finish with a white upper fuselage, dark blue cheatlines and prominent airline titles. The registration G-ALSD and the aircraft's correctly spelled Cassiopeia name distinguish this particular Stratocruiser from the other aircraft in BOAC's fleet.

Developed from the Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, the Boeing 377 combined a large pressurised passenger cabin with a distinctive lower-deck lounge. Sleeping berths, dressing rooms and a comparatively spacious interior helped establish the aircraft as one of the most sophisticated airliners of its era.

BOAC used its Stratocruisers on transatlantic and other long-range services throughout the 1950s. Although popular with passengers, the aircraft's powerful radial engines and complicated propeller systems required considerable maintenance, and the type was gradually replaced as more economical jet airliners entered service.

This Corgi release features extensive diecast construction, authentic BOAC and G-ALSD markings, clear cockpit glazing and pad-printed cabin windows. Further features include four rotating propellers, removable landing gear and the original Corgi Aviation Archive presentation display stand.

Grading

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
