On 6 April 1941, Bristol Beaufort Mk.I N1016 (OA-X) launched a daring solo attack on the German battleship Gneisenau in Brest Harbour. Despite poor weather and no support, Flying Officer Kenneth Campbell and his crew pressed on, flying at wave-top height to deliver their torpedo. It struck true, crippling the ship and forcing it back into dry dock for six months. The Beaufort was shot down during its escape, killing all onboard. Thanks to reports from the French Resistance, their heroic sacrifice was recognized, and Campbell was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
