History Behind Corgi AA35908A: The MH-60L ‘Super Six One’ Black Hawk
Super Six One (MH-60L Black Hawk) was one of the 160th SOAR helicopters in Operation Gothic Serpent (Oct 1993, Mogadishu). The mission aimed to capture lieutenants of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
On 3 Oct 1993, during the raid, Super 6-1 was struck by an RPG, crashing in a city alley. Pilots CW3 Cliff Wolcott and CW3 Donovan Briley were killed, while crew and Delta snipers defended the site under heavy fire until overwhelmed.
Soon after, another Black Hawk (Super 6-4) was also shot down, leading to a prolonged 15-hour battle as U.S. forces fought to rescue survivors. In total, 18 Americans were killed and ~85 wounded.
Though the targets were captured, the heavy losses and graphic aftermath led the U.S. to scale back and withdraw from Somalia. The downing of Super 6-1 is remembered as the turning point that escalated the raid into the Battle of Mogadishu, later chronicled in Black Hawk Down.
