History Behind Corgi AA35908A: The MH-60L ‘Super Six One’ Black Hawk

Super Six One and Operation Gothic Serpent
Super Six One (MH-60L Black Hawk) was part of the 160th SOAR during Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu, Somalia, in October 1993. The mission’s goal was to capture senior lieutenants of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
Black Hawks Down – The Battle of Mogadishu
On 3 October 1993, during the raid, Super 6-1 was hit by an RPG and crashed in a narrow city street. Pilots CW3 Cliff Wolcott and CW3 Donovan Briley were killed, and the surviving crew and Delta Force operators defended the crash site under intense fire until they were overwhelmed. Shortly afterwards, a second Black Hawk, Super 6-4, was also shot down, triggering a prolonged 15-hour battle as U.S. forces fought to reach and rescue the crews. In total, 18 Americans were killed and around 80 wounded.
Legacy of Super Six One
Although the primary targets were captured, the losses and the aftermath of the battle led the United States to scale back and eventually withdraw from Somalia. The shoot-down of Super 6-1 is widely seen as the moment the raid escalated into the Battle of Mogadishu, later depicted in Black Hawk Down, and remains a defining episode in modern helicopter warfare history.
