Description

An exceptional, highly detailed 1:72 scale diecast tribute capturing the multi-role backbone of the Luftwaffe at the height of the Battle of Britain. This premium replica within Corgi's Aviation Archive Collector Series (AA36705) meticulously renders the early-production Junkers Ju 88A-1 medium bomber.

The model represents an operational warbird assigned to Luftwaffe Lehrgeschwader 1 (LG I./III) based in France. It is decorated precisely as it appeared during Adler Tag (Eagle Day) on August 13th, 1940, during the absolute peak of the intense aerial campaign against the Royal Air Force.

Designed to satisfy a rigorous German operational requirement for a high-speed heavy dive bomber, the twin-engine Ju 88 first took flight on December 21, 1936. Affectionately dubbed "The Maid of all Work," it evolved into one of WWII's most extraordinarily versatile aircraft designs, widely regarded as the German counterpart to the British de Havilland Mosquito. Throughout the war, it was effectively deployed as a level bomber, close-support dive bomber, heavy day fighter, night fighter, torpedo bomber, and long-range reconnaissance platform.

While these early Ju 88A-1 variants initially proved to be relatively easy targets for frontline RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes during early combat encounters, rapid field modifications quickly enhanced their armor and defensive positions. The platform realized its full strategic potential during the later stages of the Battle of Britain, solidifying its place as a legendary WWII aircraft. Production ran uninterrupted from 1936 through 1945, with over 16,000 Ju 88s rolling off German assembly lines.

Highly sought after by military history collectors for its incredibly scarce 1,000-piece limited worldwide release, this 1:72 scale model features an authentic historic splinter camouflage pattern. The fuselage is heavily engineered with a solid diecast core and a highly detailed "birdcage" greenhouse canopy that encloses the flight crew. Additional premium technical accents include moveable defensive machine guns, a detailed rearward-facing gunner station, and the characteristic ventral gunner's gondola situated directly beneath the forward fuselage assembly. The forward cowlings showcase finely molded annular radiators and separate engine exhaust stack paths, completing a stunning, museum-grade aesthetic.

Grading

Grading Criteria

Our grading is based mainly on the physical condition of the model itself, including paintwork, attached parts, repairs, visible wear and overall presentation. Box condition and missing separate accessories are noted separately where applicable.

Mint (10/10)
- As new, with no visible flaws to the model itself.

Near Mint (9/10)
- Very light signs of handling, storage or display only.

Excellent (8/10)
- Light wear or a few tiny marks, but still displays very well.

Very Good (7/10)
- Noticeable wear, small chips or rubs, but still presentable as a display piece.

Good (6/10)
- Obvious overall wear, visible marks or paint loss; better suited as a display or filler piece.

Fair (5/10)
- Heavy wear, larger areas of paint loss, repairs or clearly visible flaws.

Spares / Repairs (4/10 or below)
- Significant damage, missing attached parts, broken components or best suited for restoration/spares.

If a separate accessory, stand, leaflet, certificate or optional part is missing, this will be mentioned in the listing notes. The model may still receive a high grade if the model itself remains in strong condition.
