The squadron's Commonwealth crews flew demanding Bomber Command operations over occupied Europe during the difficult early years of the Second World War.

The Wellington's Barnes Wallis-designed geodetic structure produced a strong yet relatively light airframe, enabling many badly damaged aircraft to return safely.
