The mission was intended to breach the prison walls and enable members of the French Resistance and other detainees to escape before threatened executions could take place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGroup Captain Percy Pickard commanded No. 140 Wing and flew HX922 with Flight Lieutenant John Broadley as navigator. The aircraft remained over the target area while Pickard assessed the results of the attack and determined whether the reserve formation should be called forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHX922 was attacked by German fighters shortly after leaving the target area and was shot down near Amiens. Both Pickard and Broadley were killed, and their loss became closely associated with the courage and sacrifice demonstrated during the operation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCorgi marketed AA32810 as an aircraft of No. 487 Squadron RNZAF. Historical references generally associate HX922 and its EG-F code with No. 464 Squadron RAAF during the raid.
